The Monarch Filbert is a genuinely useful shape — its oval profile gives you the precision of a flat brush and the softer edge of a round, all in one. It's particularly good for blending, where that curved tip lets you work colour smoothly without hard lines.
The filaments are synthetic polyester, sitting between sable and hog bristle in stiffness. Firm enough to move heavy-bodied oils, responsive enough for glazing and detail work, and more durable than natural hair when it comes to solvents and paint.
Works with oil colour, water-mixable oils, and acrylics. Each brush has a gold ferrule and long dark brown lacquered handle, with the Monarch's characteristic variegated hair in ivory, gold, and brown.
Note: The Monarch range uses synthetic filaments as an ethical alternative to natural Mongoose hair, which is now an endangered species.
